Social Networking Sites
Social networking sites are mushrooming as of late with a new site getting registered every second day! One of the reasons for this rapid mushrooming could be the increase in the awareness levels of Netizens around the world. Social networking sites are all over the internet. There are over a hundred sites like this listed on Wikipedia and maybe more undocumented SNS out there. These sites are supposed to facilitate your existing relationships and help you get in touch with other people who share your social circle (via common friends) or people that share your common interests. What they are not supposed to do is make you seem popular through fake friends profiles that you can rent to give yourself an ego boost! Social networking sites are one of the newest ways to interact online. According to comScore Media Metrix data, the three most popular social networking sites are MySpace.com, Facebook.com, and Xanga.com. For some, these sites are fun. However, these sites are attractive targets for on-line predators as well, because their interactive nature allows them to spread threats very quickly. Many of these threats exploit the trust people have in their friends, emphasizing the fact that it is important to treat electronic communications with care, no matter who they appear to be from. Social networking sites are attracting not only more and more users from around the world, but also more and more criminals. Security specialists say that MySpace, Facebook, Orkut and other sites for making and preserving contacts often contain extremely valuable information that can be abused to facilitate targeted attacks on users. These sites can be great for developing business relationships, especially these days, when transactions can span continents. There are many organizations hiring not via the traditional channels (job ads, resume gathering, interviews), but from contacts on professional networking sites. A large number of these sites are immensely popular with teenagers and young adults. These sites have become the in-place to meet people and begin to explore something more than chatting online, and are a convenient way to keep in touch with multiple people at once. Most may incorporate photos, video, blogging and space for personal interests. Most social networking sites are free for the users and signup and set up is quite easy. |
