Alternative Energy Choices

Alternative energy sources are in big demand today. The world is running out of oil and we're desperate to find ways to use the earth's other resources in order to power our demanding planet. Alternative energy sources are increasingly recognized as the only ways to create sustainable energy to meet the world's future needs. Savvy investors have been some of the first to recognize this and many big ones, including Richard Branson and Bill Gates, are now backing alternative energy companies.

The major alternative energy sources include ethanol, biodiesel, solar energy, wind power, fuel cells, geothermal energy, oil sands, and nuclear energy. Alternative energy sources are usually alternatives to fossil sources such as oil, coal and gas. Some alternative energy sources are being developed but need to be vigorously pursued and their application enhanced. Energy efficiency whether industrial, domestic, or agricultural-still needs to be greatly improved, and emissions need to be reduced as much as possible.

Photovoltaics are one of the more expensive renewable energy technologies, particularly when compared to utility electricity. For some, the environmental benefits of this technology outweigh its costs. Sunlight is converted to electricity using photovoltaic or solar cells. Photovoltaic (PV) cells are semiconductor devices, usually made of silicon, which contain no liquids, corrosive chemicals or moving parts. Sunlight, wind and flowing water are all available for free, unlike diesel fuel or propane used to power a traditional generator . Also, each of these methods operates virtually silently. Sunlight generates more than enough free energy to help power our homes and businesses. Installing a photovoltaic (PV) solar energy system at your residence or business is a bright investment... one that significantly reduces your utility bills, benefits the environment and increases your energy independence.

Wind power is the fastest growing alternative energy source in the United States. The capacity has grown 32% annually for the past five years. Wind power is taken in by windmills or wind turbines, which then is converted into electrical energy by the use of a on board generator, and stored in a battery bank for use in the home. With the use of some equipment like an inverter, the stored dc power is converted to ac power and can run most all of the electrical items found in the home today. The secret to alternative energy being effective is our willingness to be conservative with our use and learn not to be wasteful.

Once we take any of these renewable resources and transform them, we have a clean and efficient way to conserve power and electricity in a natural way. Remember, we are but stewards of the land and of the Earth on which we live. Our very survival as a species may come down to one thing....a common sense approach to energy!
